How long does it take to get a Guard Card?
The initial requirement is an 8-hour course. Once completed and your application and fingerprints are submitted to BSIS, processing times vary, but you can often receive your digital permit within a few weeks.
What are the prerequisites for the course?
You must be at least 18 years old and undergo a criminal history background check through the DOJ and FBI. No prior security experience is required for the initial 8-hour course.
Is the Live Scan fingerprinting included?
Tuition covers the classroom instruction. Live Scan fees and the BSIS application fee are separate costs paid directly to the fingerprinting agency and the state.
Can I work while my application is pending?
No. You must have a valid Guard Card in your possession or appearing as 'Current' on the BSIS website before you can legally perform the duties of a security guard in California.
